A historic visit to Tenerife by the president of China not only attracted worldwide publicity for the island but the hope of more tourists from China.
In recent months, tourism has been a talking point in the Canaries as this important industry has been going through difficult times as a result of various external factors including the concerns raised by the announcements of the closure of Ryan Air bases, the collapse of Thomas Cook and the noted reduction in incoming tourists from UK and Germany, who are also spending less when they are here.
This concern has been somewhat balanced by the increasing numbers in cruise holidays in the Canary Islands, rumours of Jet2 taking over the bases that Ryan Air will be releasing and now, the recent visit to Tenerife by the president of China.
During his visit, The president of china and his wife stayed at the Abama in Guia de Isora and took time out to visit Teide national park. Reports say that the President was ‘fascinated’ by the park.
The positive responses, media coverage and social media commentary has led local Tenerife government and commentators to hope that this is the first steps to Tenerife becoming a destination for Chinese tourists which would be a welcome boost to the local economy.
