The collapse of the Thomas Cook Group, including the UK tour operator and airline, announced a few weeks ago is being described as the “biggest crisis facing the Canary Islands” in years and could have lasting repercussions.
The air connectivity of the Canary Islands is one of the most prominent issues at the moment, compounded by the announcement of the closure of bases in the islands by Ryanair. The effect of Thomas Cook going into administration is greatere as the operator provided not just flights, but holiday accommoation, pacakage holidays, tours and transport.
The Spanish government calculates that as a result of the collapse, 400,000 Thomas Cook travellers will not be reaching the islands after all. The collapse is said to mainly affect the Spanish tourism industry and they anticipiate the closure of up to 500 hotels.
