Hemp is slowly making waves in the bioplastic space. Zeoform, an Australian company has patented a product derived from hemp cellulose fibres which they’ve converted into an industrial, highly malleable material which could be an alternative to plastic. The material is non-toxic, biodegradable and can produce commercial and a range of industrial grade materials. In the United States of America, there is a company called HempPlastic which has released a plastic which meets the FDA standards for food, pharmaceuticals and agricultural products.
The development of environmentally friendly materials is of great interest to many big businesses, There are reports from as early as 2012 that state that LEGO, the Danish company that needs no other introduction, wants to change the material it uses to make its branded toy bricks loved by children of all ages around the world with a target date of 2030. They are currently using a plastic resin (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), but unconfirmed reports state that the company wants to use a more environmentally friendly and more cost-effective material.
The developments like Zeoform and HempPlastic may result in that new material being hemp.
