The Canary Islands received 8.4% less tourists in September, according to data published by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
According to the detailed breakdown of the INE figures provided by the Canary Institute of Statistics (Istac), the fall suffered in September is due to the decline in the arrivals of its two main clients, British and Germans, especially the latter.
In September, 404,490 Britons chose the Canary Islands to spend their vacations, 15,850 less than a year earlier (-3.7%), and 187,037 Germans decided to enjoy a few days off on the islands, 62,689 less (-25.1%).
The collapse in the arrival of German tourists is noticeable in the traditionally strongest islands in that market, such as Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, which suffered falls in the arrival of foreign tourists that double those registered in other islands more associated with the British market, like Tenerife and Lanzarote.
Gran Canaria received in September 231,137 foreign tourists in September (40,922 less, -15.0%) and Fuerteventura, 137,603 international travelers (28,594 less, -17.2%).
For its part, Tenerife registered 356,166 international tourists (27,142 less, -7.0%); Lanzarote, 204,287 (15,624 less, -7.1%); and La Palma, 14,899 (269 less, -1.7%).
As for the expenditure figures, in September each tourist who visited the Canary Islands was spent more than a year earlier, both in the total trip (1,288 euros per person, 1.5% more), and in disbursement per person and day (149 euros, 4.2% more).
However, the decrease in the number of tourists by 8.4% and the average duration of trips by foreigners to the islands by 2.5% resulted in a 7.0% decrease in the total expenditure figure of the month.

Sin embargo, la disminución en el número de turistas en un 8.4% y la duración promedio de los viajes de los extranjeros a las islas en un 2.5% resultó en una disminución del 7.0% en la cifra de gasto total del mes.
